Carbon Steel Grade Table: A36, 1018, G90, G60 and AR500
| Grade | Coating | Typical thickness | Formability and welding | Typical parts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A36 | Bare, mill scale | 3–25 mm | Good bending and welding | Brackets, frames, base plates |
| 1018 cold rolled | Bare or oiled | 0.5–3 mm | Excellent forming and welding | Enclosures, panels, chassis |
| G90 galvanized | Heavy zinc (about 0.90 oz/ft²) | 0.5–3 mm | Good forming; weld with zinc-fume control | Outdoor cabinets, ducting |
| G60 galvanized | Lighter zinc (about 0.60 oz/ft²) | 0.5–3 mm | Good forming; same weld care | Indoor housings, HVAC parts |
| HSLA | Bare | 1.5–12 mm | High strength; needs larger bend radius | Structural and load-bearing parts |
| AR500 | Abrasion-resistant, bare | 3–25 mm | Limited forming; preheat and controlled welding | Wear plates, liners, chutes |
Hot Rolled vs Cold Rolled Steel Sheet
Choosing between cold rolled steel and hot rolled steel starts with tolerance. Cold rolled holds thickness within about ±0.05–0.1 mm with a smooth, paintable surface, at a higher cost. Hot rolled is cheaper, with looser tolerance and mill scale. Specify cold rolled for visible, tight-fit enclosures and hot rolled for thick structural parts. Read our guide to bending hot rolled steel sheet.
Specifying Galvanized and AR500 Steel
Galvanized steel is specified by zinc weight: G90 carries about 0.90 oz/ft² for outdoor and humid service, while G60 at about 0.60 oz/ft² suits indoor or lightly exposed housings. AR500 is a hardened wear plate (about 500 HB) for impact and abrasion parts such as liners and chutes. Compare options in our stainless steel vs galvanized guide.
Clear Answers for Sourcing & Technical Teams
Review critical technical capabilities, material availability, production turnaround times, and quality standards for our custom sheet metal manufacturing contracts.
We maintain a robust inventory of cold rolled steel (CRS/SPCC), hot rolled pickled and oiled (HRPO), galvanized (GI) and galvannealed steel, stainless steels (SUS304, SUS316, SUS430), and aluminum alloys (5052-H32, 6061-T6). We also source copper, brass, and custom specialty alloys upon request with full mill test certs.
- Sheet thickness capability: 0.5mm to 25mm
- Full material traceability with Mill Test Reports (MTR)
- Dedicated raw material storage to prevent cross-contamination
