Automotive Sheet Metal Materials and Forming Methods
Compare key alloys and processing methods used across automotive contract manufacturing programs.
| Material / Method | Typical Automotive Use | Why It Is Chosen |
|---|---|---|
| Cold-rolled steel (CRS) | Brackets, mounts, inner panels | Smooth surface, good formability, easy to weld |
| Hot-rolled steel (HRS) | Chassis and structural parts | Higher thickness available, cost-effective |
| Galvanized steel | Underbody and exposed panels | Zinc coating resists corrosion |
| Aluminum 5052 / 6061 | Lightweight brackets, housings, panels | Weight reduction with good strength |
| Stainless steel 304 / 316 | Trim, fasteners, exhaust-adjacent parts | Corrosion and heat resistance |
| Laser cutting + CNC bending | Blanks and formed panels | No tooling cost, fast prototype to production |
Prototype to Production for Automotive Parts
Prototype parts are laser cut and CNC bent from flat blanks so no hard tooling is needed. Our precision laser cutting handles 0.5-20 mm plate across all materials, and press brakes support up to a 3 m maximum bending length with computerized CNC bending. As projects advance, the same program data scales to production runs with consistent repeatability, whether for heavy carbon steel fabrication or structural aluminum fabrication.
Tolerances and Fit-Up in Automotive Assemblies
Bracket hole positions, bend angles, and surface flatness directly determine seam alignment during downstream mechanical assembly. To prevent stack-up errors on vehicle chassis and chassis mounting points, every lot is produced under our ISO 9001:2015 certified quality system. Critical dimensions and hole patterns are verified against engineering drawings prior to packing and international delivery.
